What to change on a Europass CV for a UK job

The Europass CV is the European Union’s standard format, and across much of Europe it is the correct thing to send. In the UK it works against you, for reasons nobody tells you at the border. The reasons are specific, and every one of them is fixable in an afternoon.

This guide is about the document, not about immigration. It assumes you already have the right to work in the UK.

Why the Europass layout struggles here

Most large UK employers screen with an applicant tracking system (ATS) before a person reads anything. NHS Trac, Civil Service Jobs, Workday, iCIMS and Taleo all parse a plain single column reliably. Columns, tables and text boxes are where they lose track.

Europass puts your contact block, your photograph and the CEFR language grid into exactly those structures. The content is fine. The container is what fails.

The photograph, date of birth, nationality and marital status are a second problem. They are normal on a Europass CV and normal in Poland, Romania and Germany. UK convention leaves them off, because they invite bias before anyone has read your experience.

The 5 changes that matter

  1. Change 1: One column, top to bottom

No tables, no text boxes, no sidebar. A parser reads a two-column page straight across, so your job title lands in the middle of a date.

  2. Change 2: No photo, and no personal details beyond contact

Cut the photograph, date of birth, nationality and marital status. Keep your name, phone, a professional email, your LinkedIn URL and your town or city.

  3. Change 3: Two pages, not five

The Europass language grid and its wide margins push a CV to 4 or 5 pages. The UK ceiling is 2, and one page if you have under 2 to 3 years behind you.

  4. Change 4: Results with a number, not a list of duties

"Line-managed a team of 8, raising output 22% in 12 months" does work that "responsible for managing a team" does not.

  5. Change 5: British English and standard headings

Organisation, optimise, centre, programme. Headings a parser can map: Personal Profile, Professional Experience, Education, Skills.

Your languages and your qualifications

The CEFR self-assessment grid is a table, so it goes. State the same information as one line under Skills: “Languages: Polish (native), English (C1), German (B2)”. A UK recruiter reads that faster than the grid anyway.

For a qualification awarded outside the UK, write it as it was awarded, then the country and the year. If you hold a formal statement of comparability, add it in one short line. Do not print a UK equivalent that nobody has given you.

Keep one date format for the whole document, and make it a UK one: “Jan 2022 – Present” or “01/2022 – Present”, never both in the same CV.

What does not change

Your experience, your employers and your dates. Rewriting a CV to the UK standard is a formatting and language job, not a licence to invent. If a number is not yours, it does not go in.

The free CV Scan reads your CV against all 8 rules of The House Method and quotes the lines that fail back to you. If you want the rewrite done for you, the prices are here, and nothing is charged before you have read the diagnosis.
