The CV an overseas-trained nurse needs for an NHS job
You have years on a ward, you have the right to work here, and the applications go quiet. The clinical experience is not the problem. The document is written for a hospital in another country, and it is being read by software and by a band 7 manager with 60 applications open.
This guide is about the document. It is not advice on NMC registration or on visas, and it assumes you already have the right to work in the UK.
What NHS Trac actually asks you for
Most NHS trusts recruit through NHS Jobs and NHS Trac, and both are built around a form rather than an attachment. You fill in your employment history, then a long free-text box usually called supporting information.
That box is where the shortlisting happens. It is scored against the person specification in the advert, and a strong CV is what you copy it out of.
Your CV file still does real work elsewhere. Nursing agencies, private hospitals, care home groups and bank shifts all ask for the document itself, and those are the same applications an applicant tracking system (ATS) parses without a human present.
The 6 changes that matter
Change 1: Answer the person specification, line by line
Every NHS advert lists Essential and Desirable criteria. Take the wording of each essential line and make sure something on your CV meets it in the same words.
Change 2: Put your registration status in the first 5 lines
A shortlister checks it before anything else. State exactly where you are, with dates, and claim nothing you have not been granted.
Change 3: Single column, no tables, no photo
NHS Trac and Civil Service Jobs read a plain top-to-bottom page reliably. Cut the photograph, date of birth, marital status and nationality.
Change 4: Name the ward, the beds and the specialty
"Staff Nurse, 28-bed acute medical ward" tells a UK band 5 manager more than three lines about duties ever will.
Change 5: Use the UK job title, not the one on your payslip
Nurse III, Senior Nurse Officer and Sister do not map here. Write the nearest UK equivalent, then your actual title in brackets.
Change 6: British English, one date format, 2 pages
Organisation, specialise, programme. "Jan 2022 – Present" or "01/2022 – Present" for the whole document, never both.
Where your registration goes, and how to word it
Put it under your name, before your Personal Profile, as one plain line. A manager who has to hunt for it assumes the answer is no.
- Registered: NMC PIN 12A3456B, adult nursing, registered since March 2024.
- NMC application in progress: CBT passed 14 March 2026, OSCE booked for 2 June 2026.
- NMC application submitted 14 March 2026, awaiting a decision on my qualification.
Write the stage you are at and the date you got there. Never write “NMC registered” while an application is open, and never print a PIN you do not hold. A trust checks the register, and one unchecked line ends the application.
If you are still waiting on an OSCE, apply for the roles that say so. Many trusts recruit internationally educated nurses into a band 4 support role first and move them to band 5 on the day the PIN lands. Say plainly that this is the route you want.

A title that does not map, no ward size, no numbers, 2 banned phrases, and a date format the rest of the CV does not use.

- Lead nurse on handover for a 32-bed acute medical ward, 8 to 10 patients per shift.
- Escalated deteriorating patients on early-warning observations and ran the ward round documentation.
- Precepted 11 newly qualified nurses over 3 years, 9 of whom stayed past their first year.
UK title with the original in brackets, the ward named and counted, results with a number, one date format.
Your qualification, written as it was awarded
Write the title in full, then the institution, the country and the year. “Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Sample College of Nursing, Manila, Philippines, 2016”.
Do not translate it into a UK degree classification. If you hold a formal statement of comparability, name it in one line and give the year. If you do not hold one, leave the comparison out.
The same rule covers your English evidence. State the test, the scores and the date, and nothing more.
The words a UK shortlister is looking for
Use the UK term for the thing you already do. Venepuncture and cannulation, NEWS2 observations, safeguarding, handover, care plans, mandatory training, infection prevention and control.
These are not buzzwords. They are the words in the person specification, and a form scored against that specification rewards you for using them where they are true.
What does not change
Your employers, your dates and what you actually did. Rewriting a CV to the UK standard is a formatting and language job, never a licence to invent. If a figure is not yours, it does not go in.
